If you’re like most small business owners, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish everything that must be done. Between serving customers, managing employees, overseeing the books, and putting out the “fires” that seem to occur every day, there’s hardly enough time to breathe. As a result you find yourself working longer and longer hours, coming in on the weekends, and losing sleep. As for taking a long vacation… that seems like an impossible dream!

If the situation I just described sounds familiar, you’re not alone. It’s very normal for business owners to be caught in just such a cycle.

But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be this way! It is possible to actually spend less time and work, more time on vacation, and still keep your business running smoothly.

Does this sound too good to be true? It’s not, and I’ll show you why. Take a moment right now to think about your “typical” workday. Think about how you spend your time, and what activities account for the most of your time.

Now ask yourself this question: how much of the work that you do on a daily basis could NOT be performed by anyone else on your team?

Most business owners are surprised to realize that they in fact spend the vast majority of their time doing work that could be handled by their employees. And that if their employees were handling these tasks, the owner would have more time for leadership, for innovation, for high-level strategic planning, and for vacation!

But it doesn’t happen automatically. Many business owners attempt to assign daily tasks to their employees but wind up frustrated because the employees don’t “get it right.” To avoid this, the key is to create systems for your employees to follow. Your employees need to understand exactly what is expected from them, how they are to go about each task, and when they are expected to be done. If you take the time to clearly define your expectations to your employees, you’ll be amazed at how much time you are able to free up each day.
