One of the most difficult jobs as a leader is implementing change. And whether it is the creation of new systems and procedures, a shift in your business goals, an expansion into a new market, or something else entirely, from time to time you will find yourself in a situation that calls for change.

If you are preparing to lead your team through a significant change, keep these three tips in mind.

1) Understand that it’s a process. First and foremost, very few things that are worthwhile come easy or quickly. Understand that you’re in it for the long haul and that you may experience some setbacks along the way. If you fail to adopt this mindset, you will find yourself discouraged and ready to give up as soon as you encounter adversity.

2) Secure the buy-in of your team. You can’t do it alone – and you certainly can’t do it if your team is actively fighting against the change, or even passively dragging their feet. That’s why it is so important to secure the buy-in of your team. And one key way to do this is by explaining how they will ultimately benefit from the changes. When you show your team the tangible benefits of the work they are putting in, you will find that it is far easier to get them motivated.

3) Don’t hesitate to adjust your plan as necessary. One of the most important rules of business is that you should always expect the unexpected. You can count on the fact that not everything will proceed as you planned it—and the bigger your project is, the more unforeseen obstacles are likely to arise. So don’t insist on following your plan rigidly. Be willing to adjust and innovate as you go—and empower your team members to do the same. This gives you a far better chance of success.

Change isn’t easy, and it isn’t usually fun. But it is necessary. If you are attempting to lead your team through change, keep these tips in mind. And please contact me if I can help in any way!
